Marine surveyor services

Welcome to Brighton Marine Surveys. My name’s Aidan Tuckett and I’m a qualified marine surveyor. I’m an Accredited Member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) and I carry out yacht and boat surveys throughout SE England. The links to the left describe how I work, how I can help you and examples of the reports I provide.

I’ve worked in the boat building and fishing industries since the late 70’s, first as a boatbuilder and designer, then with fishing communities in developing countries - and since then through restoring classic sailing yachts. I carry out pre-purchase and insurance surveys on GRP, wood and steel sailing yachts and power boats. I also carry out coding surveys of small commercial vessels for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. I deal with boats ranging from 20' power cruisers and sailing yachts to 90' iron sailing barges. I cover the Thames, Dover and Wight coasts and frequently travel to European destinations. I will provide you with an objective marine survey about the condition of a boat in a clear, straightforward format that will give you the peace of mind to make your purchase decision. I carry full professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

You can call me on 07765 35 2364 to talk through your requirements and get an immediate quote with no obligation, or you can use the enquiry form here or email me on

Given the present restrictions, our options for carrying out surveys are limited. If you would like advice on the basis of photos or brokerage listings, I am happy to provide that by phone or e-mail pending a lifting of these restrictions. As of 30 March, the following applies.

Pre-purchase and insurance surveys.

In order to carry these out, the vessel must be empty and not lived aboard. We will need permission from the yard or marina for access. The survey should be unaccompanied although we can use Facetime or Skype to go over details with clients. Vessels should be ashore.

New-build fishing vessel surveys.

Seafish have asked us to postpone all new inspections at present. It may be possible to verify details with videos and photos.

Fishing vessel registration surveys.

MCA are allowing to these to continue but see the above restrictions. You should note 'carving and marking' inspections by MCA staff cannot be carried out so it will not be possible to complete the registration process immediately.

MCA Code of Practice Surveys

As above but if these cannot be carried out, it is possible to apply to certifying authorities for a three-month extension.

Tonnage surveys

Can be carried out on a temporary one-year basis using drawings and photos.
